Day 1 Case Sessions

The day opened with the session directed by Sergio Raimond, who presented the panorama of the economic environment regarding the tourism sector in Mexico.

Later on, Miguel Gomez-Mont (Director of Fonatur) guided a conference in which he gave us a brief description of tourism in Mexico from an institutional perspective. The facts presented by him were very interested for business people looking for opportunities in the hospitality sector. By the end of the session Gomez-Mont started answering the participants’ questions which completed the views given by the guest speaker.

By the time of the third session the teams were divided by odd and even numbers in order to accommodate the participants in two different case discussions, both regarding tourism in Mexico. One discussion was lead by Dr. Martha Rivera Pesquera (marketing professor and head of IPADE’s Women Research Center) and the other one by Mario Zavala Ojeda (Human Resources professor and Director of the Executive MBA at IPADE).

Mario opened with some facts from the case to move on to the actual case discussion, cold calling both IPADE and guest students. Sometimes his ways might come across as pushy, but he really makes you think about the underlying problems that the organizations face with each of the decisions made by the management team. Ameya from IMT (India) was truly challenging and tried to defend his position as Mario squeezed deeper insights from him, as other interesting contributions were made from Smitha and Jill, both from Urbana Champaing (Illinois).

Martha’s session opened with some videos so that the people that were not acquainted with the regions could contrast them and come up with additional thoughts for the resolution.

Martha’s style was different but quite effective as well, making people commit to a decision regarding the case and then give solid arguments in order to defend their position.
